Runway Standards

Airport runway standards are globally governed by the ICAO and regionally by bodies like CASA. These standards dictate key aspects such as runway length, which is determined by aircraft performance, and width, typically ranging from 18 to 45 meters. Additionally, they address surface gradients, weight-bearing capacities, and clearance safety zones. Universal standards also apply to runway markings and signage, which include white and yellow markings as well as specific lighting requirements.


Runway standards are comprehensively categorized by several specific requirements: 1. Geometry & Dimensions


Width: The width of runways depends on the airport code and the aircraft wingspan, generally ranging from 18 meters for smaller airfields to over 45 meters for major commercial airports. 

Slopes: Longitudinal slopes are strictly regulated at a maximum of 1.5% for major runways, ensuring safe takeoffs and landings, while transverse (side) slopes must be between 0.5% and 2% to prevent water pooling and hydroplaning.

Safety Areas: Each runway must be surrounded by a graded Runway Safety Area (RSA) and Runway End Safety Area (RESA), which extend at least 90 to 240 meters beyond the pavement's end to help mitigate damage during overshoots.


2. Pavement & Weight Limits


Runways must be engineered to withstand repetitive heavy loads, which are calculated using the Pavement Classification Number (PCN) and Aircraft Classification Number (ACR) matching systems. If an aircraft's ACR surpasses the runway's PCN, there's a risk of damaging the pavement.


3. Markings & Signage


Runway markings and signage are essential for safe operations, with standardized white markings indicating centerlines, thresholds, aiming points, and touchdown zones for precision approaches. Numbers on the runway represent the magnetic compass heading rounded to the nearest 10 degrees, while parallel runways append L, R, or C (Left, Right, Center).


4. Lighting Systems


Runways utilize specific lighting colors: threshold and end lights are colored green and red, edge lights are typically white, and approach lighting systems (ALS) assist pilots in low-visibility or nighttime environments.
